kindle

last fall i started to read more books and i had heard about kindle but i wasn't sure if it was what i needed so i decided to do more research. barnes and noble's nook was already out so i compared both of them and i decided that i liked kindle the most. one of the reasons is because it has been around for a while and the bugs had been fixed while nook was brand new and people who received it had problems with it already. so i wanted to start off with a kindle and see if it is something that i would actually use. so i added it to my christmas wish list hoping that santa claus would get me one, heh.

late morning on christmas eve, we were getting ready to leave to visit my family in pa. we were in the rabbit's room (my office/hobby room where shadow and tann-tann used to stay in) and peter told me that marsay had something for me. marsay was next to the scratching post and he was sniffing at the wrapped box on the floor. peter told me that he didn't know what the cats got for me, ha ha. anyway, i picked it up and opened it. good enough it was a kindle!!! peter wanted me to open it before the drive up to pa so i could play with it but i told him that it had to be charged first so i could not use it yet. but when we came back home, i went straight to it and charged it!

i have been using it for over two months now and i LOVE it!! i can download books within a minute which is really great! picture this...you're stuck in your house during a snowstorm and you cannot go anywhere. you really want to start a new book because you just finished one but no new one is available. that's where a kindle comes in! you can download a book and start reading it in a minute. :)

i do still like reading hardbound books and paperbacks but owning a kindle is a green thing. no tree is used at all! plus it saves a lot of room in the house since you can add up to 1,500 books on a kindle! you can even delete some books from it and they will still be in your amazon account. if you want to read one of them, you can download it again with no charge.

i just finished reading. "the da vinci code" and the hardcover is 480 pages and the paperback copy has 608 pages. that's pretty thick but kindle is very thin and it's easy to hold especially when you are lying down on the bed!

my new kindle!

i love the built-in dictionary with instant look up on it.
you just need to move the cursor to the word that you
would like to see its definition.
in the picture, the word is , "parquet" and you
can see the meaningat the bottom of the screen.
cool, huh?

the next couple pictures are kindle screensavers
that are my favorite ones. when the kindle is not in use,
the screensaver will be displayed.

this is the first book i downloaded on my kindle.
i had just finished reading, "murder in the marais" and liked it a lot!
you can compare the kindle book cover to the actual book cover below.
right now kindle doesn't have a color display but
i'm hoping that they will change it someday!

this is the 'library' on the 3rd floor in my house.
there is approximately 265 books on the shelves and you can see
that there's no room for more books!
a kindle can hold up to 1,500 books, how cool is that??

  1. I've heard SOOOOOOOO many about Kindle and knows some people owns them LOVES and remarks how convievent it is for them. I would love to own one someday in near future as I love to read... we have two bookshelves FULL of books, ha.

I can see alot of PROS about Kindle than CONS. BTW, funny how Peter tells you to check on Marsay as he had something for you, haha cute!

    Enjoy your kindle! :o)

  2. Oh my gosh - Kindle is so neat!! I would love to have one that is portable with me and I can sneak in my purse for some times when I can read here and there such as in the car when I'm waiting for someone. Hmm, I wonder if Sienna and Shasta will get me a Kindle too??
    ;-)
I really like the picture of birds on your kindle. I remember reading a blogspot where this lady was so excited to buy two cool covers for her kindle and now I can see why.
    :-)
Thanks for blogging about Kindle, I learned more about it from you.

  3. Tammy, I am wondering - how much does it cost to download a book for a kindle? Do you purchase "books" for the kindle or do a subscription monthly sort of like Netflix??

  4. thanks holly and jenn for the comments!

holly, you'll have to talk with sienna and shasta about getting you a kindle for mother's day (the boys could chip in too)! :)

the cost to download a book vary. currently there are over 20,000 books that are free! that include well known books such as "pride and prejudice", "the adventure of sherlock holmes", "treasure island", etc. the books that are free are listed here:

    http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&redirect=true&sort=pmrank&field-price=1-98&ref_=sr_nr_n_1&bbn=133141011&qid=1248810721&rnid=133141011&rh=n%3A133140011%2Cn%3A!133141011%2Cp_36%3A00-00%2Cn%3A154606011

old books tend to cost less compared to new books. for example, dan brown's "the da vinci code" (2003) is $6.49 and his new book "the lost symbol" was released last fall and it's $9.60. once you buy an ebook, it's yours.

you also can subscribe magazines and newspapers. they get downloaded automatically whenever a new issue becomes available. washington post newspaper is supposed to become available to the customers before it hits the newsstand! peter subscribes to a mystery magazine and he gets a new issue every month. you can check amazon for more info.

here's the comparison between kindle and nook. i do like nook a lot too but it's so new and i didn't ask for it as i was worried that there might be a bug with the software.

as you can see, there are more titles available for nook compared to kindle. but the book that i just got ("time was soft there"- about shakespeare and company), it's not available for both kindle and nook.

also, you might not believe this but none of harry potter books are available in electronic format! some well known authors don't want to see their books in the electronic format.

but the twilight series can be added to both kindle and nook!

on a nook, you can borrow an ebook from your public library. it depends on which library and my public library does this but it won't work with a kindle, bummer. the checkout period is two weeks. i'm not sure if it can be renewed. you could check your library's website and see if they have something about ebooks?

also with a nook, you can lend or borrow a book with someone else who has a nook. kindle does not have this feature.

i know i am making it sounds like nook is better but for now i want to use something that has been around for a while and reliable. a friend of mine has a nook and he said that it's awesome.

let me know if you have any more question and i will be glad to answer! :)

  5. Wow! Thanks for the interesting information. :-) Actually a friend just bought a Nook from the local Barnes and Noble by her so it will be curious to see how she likes to comparing to you liking your Kindle. She has Usher's Syndrome so I wonder if she has the "larger print" feature available on her Nook. Thanks again. :-)

  6. Glad that you loved your Kindle! I remember that we talked about it via IChat just before Christmas.. I remember your eye was like "Am I going to get the kindle?" to Peter.. It was so funny! Someday, I would like to buy a kindle and save the environment of papers at the same time to buy a good camera (of course!).
